Heijunka is Not a Box

Heijunka is often viewed as an “advanced” lean tool or one that only certain organization types can utilize and benefit from.  Heijunka is often thought of as an “execution tool” and not understood as a fundamental concept of the Toyota Production System.  Addressing these and other misunderstandings and beginning to understand heijunka as a driver of continuous improvement and a fundamental concept of TPS is the main objective of this session.  Participants will also learn how heijunka affects supply chain performance within Toyota.

Presenter Biography

Among the first employees hired at Toyota's flagship Georgetown, KY facility. Spent almost 10 years learning Toyota's culture, principles, and operating systems first in Japan and then side-by-side with his Japanese sensei. Scott developed his TPS skills in the launch of two Toyota plants. During his tenure at Toyota he moved through the ranks to the position of Assistant Manager. For the past 12 years he has been consulting with a wide variety of companies all over the world.

Scott has worked within a number of industries including commercial manufacturing (discrete, continuous flow, job shop), military, and healthcare, helping them create a lean enterprise. This broad base of experience and knowledge puts him in high demand. Scott provides training, consulting services, executive, administrative and shop-floor support and coaching, strategic planning and deployment guidance for organizations making the journey to lean. Scott's activity-based, hands-on, total systems approach to Lean Enterprise Transformation uses the lean tools & techniques as the vehicle to accomplish specific breakthrough business strategies or objectives and drive bottom line P&L results. Scott is proficient and effective working, training, coaching and mentoring with all levels of the organization.
